Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to intentionally take, damage, or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built.
To ensure we uphold these standards, we follow a rigorous pre-work protocol:
Before any equipment is started, our team carries out a meticulous visual inspection of the hedge or tree. We look for active nests, egg fragments, and bird behaviour that indicates nesting (such as birds frequently entering and leaving the area with food)
Whenever possible, we encourage major reductions and heavy pruning to be carried out during the winter months (September to February) to avoid the peak nesting season.
If we identify active nesting during a consultation or on the day of the job, we will legally and ethically advise that work be postponed. We prioritise the welfare of the birds and the legal protection of our customers above all else.
Our checks aren't limited to birds; we also remain vigilant for other species, such as hedgehogs and bats, ensuring their habitats remain undisturbed.
